- Notes: Solidago gigantea is similar to S. canadensis except the stem is smooth and usually reddish and is hairy only in the inflorescence. There are often several stems from one root crown. The leaves are about the same size and toothed but are smooth except for fine hairs on the margins. Flower heads and fruits are similar. Flowering is from early August to mid-September, and fruiting begins in mid-September. S. gigantea is common on moist to mesic prairies, in open woods, and in disturbed places.
