- Stem: perennial; 3’ to 5’ tall; branched above; short, appressed hairs.
- Leaves: alternate; deeply, pinnately lobed; blades of lower leaves 7” by 4” with 4” leaf stalks, upper leaves smaller and nearly sessile; mostly smooth margins; hairy above and below.
- Inflorescence: few heads at the ends of long flower stalks.
- Heads: several drooping, yellow rays, 1” long; brown rounded disk 1/2” tall and 3/8” wide; fillaries lance-shaped, 1/4” long, hairy; flowering from early July to mid-August.
- Fruits: “seeds” (fruits) 1/16” long, black, no plume; fruiting begins in mid-July.
- Habitat: common on moist to dry prairies and in woodland edges, also on roadsides and open places; often associated with some disturbance.
