Notes: Liatris aspera is similar to L. pycnostachya in height and general appearance. The leaves are somewhat shorter, from 5” by 1/2” to 1” by 1/8”, and long-tapering to leaf stalks on the lower leaves. The heads in the inflorescence are more widely spaced, with a leafy bract below each head. The heads are similar except for somewhat larger fillaries (5/16” tall), closely appressed, and with rounded tips. The fruits are similar. Flowering is from mid-August to mid-September, with fruiting beginning in late August. L. aspera is common on upland prairies to dry, rocky, and sandy prairies.
