- Stem: perennial shrub; 1’ to 2 1/2’ tall; branched; very hairy.
- Leaves: alternate; pinnately divided; blades 2 1/2” by 3/4”; twelve to twenty pairs of leaflets; leaflets oval with small points at the tips; very hairy above and below.
- Inflorescence: racemes at the ends of the branches; 1” to 4” long; flowers densely packed.
- Flowers: corolla purple, narrow, 3/8” long, with yellow stamens projecting beyond the petals; calyx 3/16” long, hairy; flowering from late June to mid-July.
- Fruits: one-seeded pod 3/16” long, densely covered with short hairs, curved style still attached; partially within calyx; fruiting begins in early July; fruits begin dropping in late July.
- Habitat: frequent on dry and mesic prairies; also in woodland edges.
