- Stem: perennial; tufted, with basal leaves; flower stalk 6” to 10” tall; smooth.
- Leaves: basal; linear, gradually tapering to a sharp tip; 3” to 5” by 1/16”; smooth.
- Inflorescence: umbel of several flowers on a leafless flower stalk; two upright bracts of unequal length below each umbel.
- Flowers: petals and sepals light violet to white, 3/8” long, abruptly sharp-tipped; with a yellow center; flowering from early to late May.
- Fruits: capsule; round, 5/32” in diameter; three-chambered; light brown; seeds black, 1/32” in diameter; fruiting begins in mid-May; seeds begin dropping in early June.
- Habitat: common on mesic to dry prairies; also on sandy and moist prairies and in woodland openings.
