Stem: perennial; to 3’ tall; sometimes branching above; rough-hairy; often with several to many stems from the same root crown, appearing bushlike.
Leaves: alternate; oval, tapering to both ends; 2 1/2” by 3/8”; hairy, especially on the veins on the upper surfaces; sessile.
Inflorescence: one-sided, coiled at the tip and straightening as flowers develop; at the tips of the stems; with a leaflike bract below each flower; hairy.
Flowers: corolla white, tubular with sharp-pointed lobes; corolla 1/2” to 3/4” long; style exceeding the corolla; flowering from mid-June to mid-July.
Fruits: nutlets about 1/8” long, top-shaped, hard and shiny, four per flower within the calyx; fruiting begins in mid-July.
Habitat: common to frequent in western Iowa to very infrequent in eastern Iowa; on dry or sandy upland prairies.
