Blue lettuceLactuca tatarica (L.) C. A. Meyer
Lactuca pulchella (Pursh) DC.
- Notes: Lactuca tatarica is similar to L. canadensis except it is perennial and is usually shorter (1 1/2’-3’). The leaves have large, uneven lobes or are smooth on the margins and have no basal ears. The inflorescence is similar, but the flowers are blue. The heads are larger (about 1” across), the fillaries are 1/2” long, and the “seeds” (fruits) are larger (3/16” in diameter) with a longer beak (1/8”). Flowering is from late June to mid-August, with fruiting beginning in mid-July. L. tatarica is infrequent on dry prairies and Loess Hills prairies and is sometimes on more mesic prairies.
