- Stem: perennial; very short with basal leaves.
- Leaves: basal; divided into three leaflets; blades 3” by 1 1/2”; leaf stalks 2” to 6” long, long-hairy; sharp marginal teeth on the leaflets, the end tooth of the middle leaflet usually shorter than those adjacent; few hairs above and below.
- Inflorescence: few-flowered cluster on a flower stalk, which does not rise above the leaves.
- Flowers: petals white, 1/4” long on a 1/4” wide floral cup; sepals 1/4” long, alternating with bracts; many yellow stamens; flowering from early to late May.
- Fruits: fleshy red receptacle, dome-shaped, 3/8” long with one-seeded fruits embedded in the surface; fruiting begins in mid-May.
- Habitat: common on dry to moist prairies, in open woods, on roadsides, and in other open places.
