- Stem: perennial; 2’ to 3’ tall; smooth.
- Leaves: alternate; linear with sharp tips; 3” by 1/4” to 1” by 3/16” above; hairy on margins and veins.
- Inflorescence: branching flower stalks from stem tip and leaf axils in upper half to fourth of the stem; producing wide, corymbiform inflorescence.
- Heads: yellow ray and disk flowers; head 1/8” across; fillaries 1/4” long; flowering from mid-August to mid-September.
- Fruits: “seeds” (fruits) 1/16” long; plumes 1/8” long; fruiting begins in late August.
- Habitat: infrequent on moist (to dry) prairies; often found in patches in moist roadside ditches.
