- Stem: perennial; 2 1/2’ to 4’ tall; more or less branched above; sometimes hairy; lower leaves falling by flowering time.
- Leaves: alternate; linear, tapering bases and pointed tips; main stem leaves 3” by 3/8”, leaves on branches smaller (3/4” by 1/8”); often serrated; smooth above and below; sessile.
- Inflorescence: highly branched, leafy, elongate.
- Heads: white, 3/4” across; fillaries 1/4” tall, green-tipped with a narrow, white border; many white rays; yellow disk flowers; flowering from early to late September.
- Fruits: “seeds” (fruits) 1/16” long, pointed at one end with plumes of 1/8” hairs at the other; fruiting begins in mid-September.
- Habitat: infrequent on low, moist prairies and marshes to upland prairies.
