- Stem: perennial; 1’ to 1 1/2’ tall, somewhat sprawling; few long hairs.
- Leaves: basal with leaf stalks up to 6”; blades deeply lobed into three broad parts, each shallowly lobed into threes; the blades 2 1/2” by 4”; two leaves just below the inflorescence opposite, sessile, the blade 2” by 3”; hairy above and below.
- Inflorescence: a single flower per flower stalk; usually two stalks per plant.
- Flowers: sepals petal-like, white, 1/2” long, usually five per flower (no petals); many pale yellow stamens; flowering from mid-May to late June.
- Fruits: one-seeded, flattened, circular with a prominent wing, hairy; 1/8” long with a persistent style; the numerous fruits of each flower forming a ball 3/8” in diameter; fruiting begins in mid-June, and fruits begin dropping in late June.
- Habitat: common on moist prairies and in open woods; also on roadsides and in other open places; often forming large patches.
