Angiosperms: Dicotyledons
Violaceae
Violet Family
Bird’s foot violetViola pedata L.
- Notes: Viola pedata is quite similar to V. pedatifida except the leaves are lobed into narrower segments with fewer secondary lobes, especially on the center lobe. The first leaves of the season are less divided and smaller (3/4” long). The petals are lighter in color, the stamens and style protrude from the center of the flower, and the petals are without hairs. Flowering is from early to late May, and fruiting begins in late May. V. pedata is frequent on dry, rocky, and sandy prairies and is very uncommon in the western part of its range in Iowa.
