Ground cherry Clammy ground-cherry Physalis heterophylla Nees
Notes: Physalis heterophylla is similar to P. virginiana except the stem is sticky-hairy. The leaves are wider (1 1/2” by 1 1/4”), and the bases are more rounded. The leaf margins have large, shallow teeth, and the leaves are more hairy on the upper surface. The inflorescence is similar, but the flowers are somewhat smaller (5/8” across). The fruits are similar but are green to yellow in color. Flowering is from mid-June to mid-August, and fruiting begins in early July. P. heterophylla is common on mesic and sandy prairies, on roadsides, in open woods, and in other open, disturbed places.
