- Stem: perennial; 1’ to 2’ tall; sometimes branching at the middle or below; smooth.
- Leaves: opposite; linear, tapering to both ends; sessile; 1 5/8” by 3/8” to 2” by 5/8”; strongly toothed; smooth above and below.
- Inflorescence: clusters of flowers at the nodes in the upper half to two-thirds of the plant.
- Flowers: corolla white, 1/8” long, two-lipped, the style exceeding the corolla; calyx 1/16” tall with sharp tips; flowering from mid-July to mid-August.
- Fruits: four nutlets, 1/16” in diameter, develop within the calyx; fruiting begins in late July.
- Habitat: common in wet open places such as riverbanks, sloughs, and low prairies.
