- Stem: perennial; 6” to 12” tall; branching above; hairy.
- Leaves: alternate; linear, tapered bases and rounded tips; 2” by 1/4”; smooth-edged; sessile; hairy above and below.
- Inflorescence: coiled at the tip, straightening as flowers develop; bract below each flower.
- Flowers: petals yellow-orange; corolla tube 3/8” long with 1/4” lobes; sharp pointed sepals, 3/16” long, hairy; flowering extends from early May to mid-June.
- Fruits: very hard, cream-colored nutlets in clusters of four within the calyx, 1/16” long; fruiting begins in late May.
- Habitat: frequent on dry to moist prairies.
