- Stem: perennial; 2 1/2’ to 3 1/2’ tall; unbranched; smooth.
- Leaves: alternate; linear with tapering base and pointed tip; sessile; 2 1/2” by 1/4”; smooth above and below.
- Inflorescence: umbel of up to four flowers at the stem tip; flower stalks 2” to 3” long; flowers held upright; three or four leaves in a whorl just below the inflorescence.
- Flowers: petals and sepals orange, 2” long, with a narrow base and widening above; dark spots on the lower half of petals and sepals; stamens and style raised above petals and sepals; flowering from mid-June to mid-July.
- Fruits: capsule; 2” long by 3/8” in diameter, cylindrical, with three chambers; fruits mature in late August.
- Habitat: infrequent on moist to mesic prairies; also on dry and sandy prairies.
