- Notes: Lilium michiganense is similar to wood lily, but the leaves are whorled (5-7 per node) and smooth above and hairy below. Flowers face downward on arching stalks with the petals and sepals curved backward. The fruit, a capsule, is smaller (1 1/2” long), widest above the middle, and tapering to the base. Flowering is from late June to mid-July. Fruits mature in late August. L. michiganense is infrequent on moist prairies and roadsides and in open grassy places to moist, open woods. It is most common in northeastern Iowa.
