Notes: Liatris cylindracea is shorter than I. pycnostachya (1’ to 2’ tall), with smooth stems and narrower leaves (to 1/8”). The heads are stalked with only a few heads (1-3) to a crowded inflorescence 3”to 4” long. The heads are longer (3/4”), with the fillaries appressed and lance-shaped below to hair-tipped above. Fruits are similar. Flowering is from early August to early September, and fruiting begins in mid-August. L. cylindracea is very uncommon on dry, rocky, and bluff prairies.
