Maximillian’s sunflowerHelianthus maximiliani Schrader
- Notes: Helianthus maximiliani is generally similar to saw-tooth sunflower except it is not quite as tall (4’ to 5’). The leaves are long and narrow (5” to 6” by 1/2”), folded along the midrib, and rough above and below. The flower stalks are hairy, the rays are shorter (3/4” by 1/4”), and the heads are 2” across. The fillaries are lance-shaped and hairy on both the backs and margins. Flowering is from late August to mid-September, and fruiting begins in early September. H. maximiliani is frequent on dry, upland prairies.
