Angiosperms: Dicotyledons
Verbenaceae
Vervain Family
Narrow-leaved vervainVerbena simplex Lehm.
- Notes: Verbena simplex is shorter than V. stricta (1’ to 1 1/2’ tall) and is not as hairy on the stem and leaves. There is a tendency to produce very short branches in the axils of the stem leaves. The leaves are narrow (1 1/2” by 1/4”) and toothed on the upper half, with few hairs above and below. The flowers are not as crowded in the inflorescence, and the lobes of the corolla are fringed. Flowering is from mid-June to late August, with fruiting beginning in late June. V simplex is frequent on sandy prairies and open bottomland and is able to tolerate disturbance.
