Notes: Salix petiolaris is similar to S. humilis except it is usually shorter (to 4’) and the stems are reddish and smooth. The leaf margins are toothed. The leaves are larger (to 3” by 3/4”), and have sharper points, with no basal leaflets (stipules). The leaves appear with the flowers. The inflorescence, flowers, and fruits are similar, but the fruits are longer (to 1/4”). Flowering is from early to late April, and fruiting begins in mid-May. S. petiolaris is common in northeast Iowa on moist prairies and in marshes.
