- Stem: perennial; very short with basal leaves.
- Leaves: basal; linear, 2” to 4” by 1/8”, pointed tips; sessile; long-hairy above, woolly below.
- Inflorescence: raceme on a leafless flower stalk, 3” to 6” long; flowers crowded, raceme 1” to 3” long; woolly.
- Flowers: four tiny white petals barely exceed the calyx; woolly calyx, 1/8” long; flowering from early June to early July.
- Fruits: capsule develops within the calyx; smooth, lens-shaped; open by dropping of the top of the capsule; fruiting begins in mid-June.
- Habitat: common on dry, sandy, rocky, and Loess Hills prairies in western Iowa; infrequent in eastern Iowa; also on roadsides, in pastures, and in other dry, disturbed places.
