- Stem: perennial; 1’ to 1 1/2’ tall; sometimes several stems from one root crown; hairy.
- Leaves: usually alternate; pinnately lobed, each lobe again lobed; lower leaves 3” by 1”; leaf stalks very hairy; smooth above, few hairs below.
- Inflorescence: raceme; small-hairy, lobed leaves below each flower; flowers crowded.
- Flowers: corolla yellow, tubular, 1” long, upper lip hooked downward, lower lip shorter, divided into three lobes; calyx 5/16” long, two-lipped; flowering from early to late May.
- Fruits: capsule, 5/16” long, opening into four segments; lower part of calyx remaining intact, enclosing base of fruit; inflorescence elongating in fruit, separating the fruits; fruiting begins in mid-May.
- Habitat: frequent on dry, sandy, and rocky prairies; also in open woods on thin soils.
