Fertile Fronds: stalk 8”; blade with several pinnately arranged lobes, appressed to the midvein; contracted lobes bearing spherical clusters of spore-producing structures (sporangia); light brown when developing, dark brown when mature; the plants often not producing fertile fronds; development begins as early as mid-May and continues until early July.
Habitat: common on wet prairies and marshes; also in wet, open places and in moist, open woods; usually found in patches.
