- Stem: perennial; 1 1/2’ to 2 1/2’ tall; some branching above the middle; few hairs.
- Leaves: opposite; oval with rounded bases and pointed tips; 3 1/4” by 1 1/2”; leaf stalks 1/2” with stiff hairs on the angles; smooth above and below.
- Inflorescence: flowers on 1” to 1 1/2” flower stalks, from the upper leaf axils, two flowers per node; the flowers drooping and facing downward.
- Flowers: corolla yellow, 1/2” long, flat-faced, hairs near the base; small projections between the stamens; calyx 3/8” long, sharp-pointed; flowering from late June to early August.
- Fruits: oval capsules 3/16” long, opening at the tips with five points; fruiting begins in early July.
- Habitat: common on moist soils on prairies, in open woods, on roadsides, and in other open places; often associated with some disturbance.
