- Stem: perennial; 2’ to 2 1/2’ tall; unbranched; few hairs.
- Leaves: alternate; wider above the middle with pointed or rounded tips and tapering bases, 2 1/2” by 1”; margins slightly toothed; gradually decreasing in size toward the tips; hairy.
- Inflorescence: long raceme with leaflike bracts below each flower.
- Flowers: light to medium blue, 1/4” to 1/2” tubelike corolla with three lower lobes; flowering from early June to mid-July.
- Fruits: capsules opening at the tips; 1/4” long; maturing within the calyx lobes; fruiting begins in late June.
- Habitat: frequent on dry to moist prairies, on roadsides, and in little-disturbed open areas.
