Dotted blazing starLiatris punctata Hooker
- Notes: Liatris punctata is shorter than L. pycnostachya (1’ to 2 1/2’ tall) and often with several stems from the same root crown. The leaves are smaller, from 4” by 1/8” to 2” by 1/16”, with tiny dots over both leaf surfaces. The inflorescence is shorter, 3” to 5” long, while the heads are longer, to 3/4”. The fillaries are 1/2” to 5/8” long, the lower ones with stiff, marginal hairs. The fruits are similar. Flowering is from early August to early September, and fruiting begins in mid-August. I. punctata is frequent on dry, sandy prairies and Loess Hills prairies.
