- Stem: perennial; with basal leaves and leafless flower stalk.
- Leaves: basal; round, lobed with palmate veins; blades 2 1/2” by 3”; leaf stalks 3” to 6”, with stiff hairs; leaf margins shallow-lobed with each lobe toothed; few, stiff hairs below, mostly on the veins, fewer hairs above.
- Inflorescence: branched; drooping flowers on a long flower stalk, 1 1/2’ to 2 1/2’ tall, hairy.
- Flowers: white to greenish, with an elongate, oblique-margined floral tube, 3/8” long; sepals and petals 1/16” long, alternating on the margin of the floral tube; flowering from late May to mid-June.
- Fruits: capsules, 5/16” long, wide at the base and tapering to the tip; splitting at the tips into two recurved points; seeds tiny, remaining in the upright capsule; fruiting begins in mid-June.
- Habitat: common on upland to dry prairies; sometimes on moist prairies and in open woods.
