- Stem: perennial; 1’ to 2’ tall; unbranched; few spreading hairs.
- Leaves: basal and with one pair of stem leaves below the inflorescence; leaves deeply palmately lobed with five principal lobes; blades 4” across, leaf stalks 6” to 10” long, stem leaves smaller and on shorter leaf stalks; stiff hairs above and below.
- Inflorescence: several flowers at the ends of branches and stem tip.
- Flowers: petals red-pink, 1/2” to 3/4” long, wide-spreading; five lobed style, five prominent stamens; sepals 1/4” long with marginal and terminal hairs; flowering from early to late May.
- Fruits: seedpods narrow and pointed, 3/8” long; seeds are released when the lower portion of each fruit segment splits and coils toward the tip of the fruit; fruiting begins in late May.
- Habitat: frequent in moist to mesic woods and prairies.
