Slender sedgeCarex lasiocarpa Ehrh.
- Notes: Carex lasiocarpa is a tufted perennial. The stem is 1 1/2’ to 2 1/2’ tall, smooth, and round. The leaf blades are 12” by 3/32” and smooth. Male and female flowers are in separate spikes, with the male spikes above the female spikes. One or two male spikes are 1” long by 3/32” in diameter. One or two female spikes are 3/4” to 1” long by 3/16” in diameter. A threadlike bract to 4” long is attached at the base of the upper female spike. The perigynium is oval, tapering to two teeth at the tip, is hairy, and has three or five distinct veins. Three stigmas protrude from the perigynium. The seedlike fruit is triangular and 1/16” long. Flowering is from mid-May to early June. Fruiting begins in late May. Fruits begin dropping in mid-June. C. lasiocarpa is frequent on wet prairies and marshes and in wet, sandy, open places.
