- Stem: perennial; 1’ to 2’ tall; unbranched; smooth.
- Leaves: alternate; lower leaves with leaf stalks, blades 1 1/2” by 3/4”, without lobes; upper leaves sessile, 3/4” by 3/8”, smaller above; shallow-lobed; smooth above and below.
- Inflorescence: raceme; continues to produce new flowers at the tip.
- Flowers: four white petals, with rounded tips, 5/16” long; four sepals, shorter; flowering from early to late May.
- Fruits: seedpod slender, 1 1/4” by 1/16”; opening into two linear compartments; on a stalk 1 1/4” long; spaced about 3/8” apart at maturity; fruiting begins in mid-May.
- Habitat: infrequent in moist soil in open woods and on wet prairies.
