Hairy gramaBouteloua hirsuta Lag.
- Notes: Bouteloua hirsuta is similar to side-oats grama but is shorter (6” to 12” tall). The leaf sheaths are smooth with leaf blades 4” long having a few long hairs above and below. There is usually only one 3/4” to 1” long spike per flower stalk. The flower stalk extends beyond the florets. The spikelets are 1/4” long with the outer glume with dark, bulb-based hairs. Flowering is from early to late July. Fruiting begins in mid-July. B. hirsuta is infrequent on dry, sandy, and rocky prairies, becoming very infrequent in eastern Iowa.
