The species are presented in order by family and within families by genus. Pteridophytes, the ferns and fern allies, are first, followed by the flowering plants, dicots first and then monocots.

Cactaceae - Cactus Family
The cactus family has large flowers with many petals and stamens. The sepals, petals, and stamens are attached atop a large ovary with spines on its surface. The stems are flattened and divided into segments in Iowa species, the prickly pears. The flowers are attached in a row along the upper margin of the upper stem segments.
