The leaf sheaths are hairy, and the ligules are of 1/8” long hairs. The leaf blade is 2” to 3” by 3/8” and sparsely hairy above and hairy below. The inflorescence is up to 3” long with purple spikelets 1/16” long. D. acuminatum flowers from early to late June, and fruiting begins in mid-June. Spikelets begin dropping in late June. D. acuminatum is common on sandy to mesic prairies, on roadsides, and in upland woods, becoming very infrequent in western Iowa.
