Blazing starLiatris ligulistylis (A. Nelson) K. Schum.
- Notes: Liatris ligulistylis is shorter than L. pycnostachya (1’ to 2 1/2’ tall) with a hairy stem. The lower leaves are 7” by 3/4” tapering to both ends with a leaf stalk half the length of the blade. The upper leaves are sessile and reduced in size to 1”by 1/8”. The heads are stalked (1/2” to 1”). The inflorescence is 4” to 6” (12”) long with the heads overlapping. The heads are wider (1/2”), and the fillaries are rounded and overlapping, 5/8” long, and purple-fringed. The fruits are similar. Flowering is from early August to late August, and fruiting begins in mid-August. L. ligulistylis is very uncommon on moist to upland prairies.
