Round-fruited St. John’s wortHypericum sphaerocarpum Michx.
- Notes: Hypericum sphaerocarpum is similar to H punctatum except the stem is slightly winged and somewhat shorter (1’ to 2’). Short branches often develop from the stem leaf axils. The leaves are similar, up to 3” by 5/8”, but not black-dotted. The inflorescence is similar. Flowers and fruits are similar but are without black dots or spots. Flowering is from late June to late July, with fruiting beginning in mid-July. H sphaerocarpum is frequent in moist to wet open habitats, on roadsides, and on prairies and is often associated with some disturbance.
