- Stem: perennial; sprawling, from 6” to 2’ long; often with tiny, hooked hairs on the angles.
- Leaves: alternate; linear with tapering bases and pointed tips; tiny barbs on the margins; sessile; basal leaves 1 1/2” by 1/4”, gradually decreasing in size toward the tip of the stem.
- Inflorescence: single flowers from upper leaf axils, on stems 2” to 4” long with several tiny leaves.
- Flowers: light blue; spreading corollas, 1/4” to 1/2” long; flowering from early July to mid-August.
- Fruits: capsules opening at the tips by tiny points; 1/8” long; fruiting begins in early August.
- Habitat: moist lowland prairies to marshes.
