Stem: perennial; 3’ to 4’ tall; unbranched except sometimes one or two branches from the upper half; finely hairy.
Leaves: alternate; lower leaves with long leaf stalks, blades 6” by 2”; middle and upper leaves sessile, 3 1/2” by 3/4” and smaller, tapering bases and pointed tips; margins round-toothed; hairy above and below.
Inflorescence: flower stalks branch to form a corymbiform inflorescence; hairy.
Heads: yellow ray and disk flowers; heads 3/8” across; fillaries blunt-tipped, 3/16” long, hairy; flowering from mid-August to mid-September.
Fruits: “seeds” (fruits) 1/16” long, plumes 3/16” long; fruiting begins in late August.
Habitat: common on dry to mesic prairies to moist prairies; also in open woods.
