Scrophulariaceae - Figwort Family
The figwort family has four or five petals fused into a two-lipped tube. There are two or four stamens; sometimes a fifth, sterile stamen is at the back of the flower, giving rise to the name beard tongue as in the penste-mons. In some species the irregularity of the flower is not as pronounced and two petals differ only slightly from the other three; Culver s root is in this category. The fruit is a capsule; the leaves are alternate, opposite, or whorled on the stem.
