Pale beardtonguePenstemon pallidus Small
- Notes: Penstemon pallidus is similar to P grandiflorus except shorter (1’-3’) and with hairy stems. The leaves are narrower (2” by 3/4”), taper to pointed tips, and are long-hairy above and below. The inflorescence has flowers on axillary branches from the upper nodes. The flowers have white corollas and are shorter (5/8”). The fruits are smaller (5/16”) and split into two halves. Flowering is from mid-May to mid-June, and fruiting begins in early June. P pallidus is frequent in dry, sandy soils on prairies, in open woods, and in woodland openings in southeastern Iowa but elsewhere is very infrequent.
