Little prickly pearOpuntia fragilis (Nutt.) Haw.
- Notes: Opuntia fragilis is similar to O. humifusa except the joints are smaller, 1” long by 3/4” wide, and more cylindrical, and the spines are shorter, 1/2”. The flowers are slightly smaller with 3/4” petals, and the fruits are also smaller. Flowering is from mid- to late June, and fruiting begins in early July. In Iowa, O. fragilis is found only on Sioux Quartzite (Pipestone) outcrops in extreme northwest Iowa.
